CAMEL COATED

Knit Cropped Turtleneck and Skirt set: PHLO by Mariah, Coat: Nasty Gal

Camel colored coats are the big trend for this winter season! This neutral hue goes well with any seasonal shade such as navy, forest green, bordeaux, and of course black, grey, and white. I love a good hood on anything so I was sold with this cozy wool and poly blend coat from Nasty Gal. I wore it with my custom PHLO by Mariah set and a pair of my favorite lace up tiger print Jeffrey Campbell's.

ALL OF THE LIGHTS

Jumpsuit: American Apparel, Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell, Bag: Topshop

I've detested jumpsuits in the past because I never could find one that would fit my short physique. Now, I've become a fan of the jumpsuit because it's in an outfit in one piece. Jumpsuits are the dress alternative, but more sporty and relaxed. This one from American Apparel is super easy, comfortable, and great for the season. I paired it with one of my favorite Jeffrey's to add some print to the 'fit.

FOR THE LOVE OF CALVIN

In the previous post, I interviewed local emerging designer Cassie Evanow and was fortunate enough to get one of her custom pieces. I love how she reconstructs classic American brands such as Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger and designs with a modern and sexy twist. Check out her Instagram: @ShopJawn and her website for her pieces. Snag them quickly because they sell out fast!

Local Designer Spotlight: Cassie Evanow

Today's local designer spotlight is 25 year old Cassie Evanow. I spotted her designs on Instagram and was immediately impressed by her creativity and originality. Her pieces are one of a kind and sell out with the blink of an eye. I got the chance to interview the young talented designer about her brand and also snag a custom piece of hers!

When did you first start designing?
I've been designing practically my whole life. My mom was a sewer so I was taught early. Most of my early sewing consisted of tailoring/reconstructing hand-me-downs from my brother and sister. In high school I began making dresses and function costumes from scratch.

Who are some of your favorite designers?
I don't really have any favorite designers, so that's why I became one. I've never been completely amazed by any one designer. Although you could say Betsey Johnson was a pretty big inspiration for me in my younger days.

Who/what inspires you when it comes to your designs?
My current designs are usually inspired by trends of the past. I love bringing back my old favorite looks with a modern twist.

Who is your customer? Who do you design for?
I design for the modern girl. I love creating wearable looks that combine street and suburb, tomboy and diva, rebellious and conservative. All with a twist of uniqueness.

It's clear you take pride in your body shape and size. How do you feel being a voice for not only slimmer women, but for women in general to take pride in their own shape?
I don't want people to know me as a brand who just caters to skinny girls, even though that's what my recent designs are best for because I'm used to using myself as a mannequin! However, I am an advocate for skinny girls because I feel like they have been getting the shaft lately with all this big booty hoe nonsense. Nobody should ever be made to feel ashamed of their appearance. God made everybody exactly how they were supposed to be! I faced a lot of insecurities as a teenager who never got boobies, but now I'm proud because I'm me and NOBODY else looks like me. Once I started convincing myself of that, my whole life changed and I started to radiate a whole new sexiness. I would never get any type of cosmetic surgery.  I'm too busy being thankful that I have all my limbs to worry about T&A!

What's the one thing you can't live without?
The one thing I couldn't live without would be faith!  I am blessed with the wisdom and understanding that everything is cool and groovy. Granted, I haven't had a very rough life, but when life hits me wit some B.S., I take a deep breath and handle it with grace and confidence.

Whats next for your brand? What goals and aspirations do you have in store?

I keep telling myself that my next goal is to expand and create a real brand, but I'm not in a rush. I'm not interested in any collaborations, I just want to create. I need full creative freedom for the benefit of my mental state right now.  I've been trying to get away from reconstructing existing brands and get more serious about mass production. For now, I just vibe with whatever design I feel like creating that day when I wake up in the morning!

I love the message that Cassie promotes with being an advocate for her body type. Ironically, I'm not a slim or slender girl, but I do believe that EVERY body type should be appreciated. I love that she was able to design a piece for me to fit my body just right! Check out the pictures of me in my custom piece from Cassie in the above blog post!

JUST DO IT

Sports Bra: Nike, Skirt: Topshop, Shoes: Nasty Gal

"I've always been inspired by the functionality of performance wear and the advancements in fabrics and technical details." - A Wang

After the successful launch of his H&M collection, I sported a Wang inspired look with a Nike sports bra and paired it with my favorite Top Shop skirt. I love the comfortability of the Sportswear trend, and combining it with feminine elements. The skirt is also extremely comfy.

It's been some months now since this collaboration was first announced and now the line will finally be available in select H&M stores and online. If you don't want to leave home to get your hands on a A Wang x HM piece, the collection will also be sold online on the H&M website at 10 am EST (that means 7 am for us west coasters.)

Here are some of my favorite items from the collab:

BAD BUNNY

Top: Topshop, Leather Jacket: H&M, Tulle Tutu: American Apparel, Booties: Jeffrey Campbell via Nasty Gal, Lace Bunny Ears: Eden Sky

Happy Halloween! (Or "Pre-ween I should say.) For this Halloween inspired look, I kept it stylish and cute without being overtly provocative. These lace bunny ears have become one of my favorite accessories. I added the tulle tutu for some whimsy and layered chained necklaces for a statement piece. And what says Fall more than a leather jacket?

PINK IS THE NEW BLACK

Duster Jacket: ASOS, Top: American Apparel, Jeans: American Apparel, Necklace: Urban Outfitters, Faux Rabbit Purse: Nasty Gal

I bought this ASOS duster jacket some months ago during the beginning of Summer, but I rarely wore it because it was too hot. Now that the weather has cooled down, I can finally pull this piece out of the closet archives. The color pink isn't what I normally gravitate towards, but it has grown on me  this season. I love the softness it gives when paired with any outfit. The length of the jacket provides just enough drama to dress up a regular white top and jeans. I added a statement necklace to this look for some extra pizzaz. A pair of denim jeans and a white top is a blank canvas to add touches of your own personal style, and can be dressed up or down depending on your mood or whereabouts.

LEATHER WEATHER

Leather Crop Top: American Apparel, Boyfriend Jeans: American Apparel, Shawl: Urban Outfitters, Leather Pouch: American Apparel, Leather Mules: Shoe Cult via Nasty Gal, Hat: Urban Outfitters

Leather is a always a staple for this season. I found some great leather accents to pair with any look, casual or dressy.I finally got to wear my mules before the weather got too cold. Luckily, I have some more time to wear them, since the temperature doesn't drastically drop in LA. I found the perfect leather pouch that matches my reptilian leather mules. This monochrome Shawl is a cozy throw on that I have been living in so far this Fall.

Fall Haul

Shawl: Urban Outfitters, Booties (both): Jeffrey Campbell via Nasty Gal, Faux Rabbit Fur Purse: Nasty Gal, Shaggy Cardigan: Nasty Gal, Leather Croc Pouch: American Apparel, Lace Rabbit Ears: Eden Sky

Sorry for the huge delay!

Fall is by far my favorite month for fashion. I love boots, layers, and anything knit. Though it's October, it doesn't really feel like Fall yet in LA. However, I've started stocking up and sporting some goodies that I consider essential for this season. Above are my favorite pieces so far that I've acquired for Fall. I'll be posting full looks including these items soon!

Local Designer Spotlight: Nicole Shante

Living in LA, I've come across a lot of young and emerging designers that are based in this city.  I wanted to show my support for local talent by doing a feature on each designer who I have been intrigued by.

I came across Nicole Shante through my blog and was invited to attend a showcase in Downtown LA for her Resort 2015 collection. Her pieces had a confident ease about them that appealed to me. Read below to learn a little bit more about Nicole Shante:

Age: 30

Hometown: Los Angeles

When did you start designing? I've been designing since I was a little girl, but I started taking being a designer serious about 3 years ago (2011)

Who is your customer? My customer is the women who is fearless when it comes to fashion; she's confident and a risk taker.

What inspires you? It may sound crazy but Mood inspires me. When I'm working on a new collection I'm stuck in a specific mood. I adjust to that mood, the music I listen to, the food I eat, what I watch is all based on that mood.

Who is your ultimate fashion icon/inspiration? Tom Ford. I love how he plays by his own rules. I really admire that. He also dabbles in so many creative things and he has so much class! love him

What do you think every girl should have in her closet? Every girl should have a good pencil
skirt it goes along way, and a good pair of jeans, a good pair of jeans will be more loyal then a boyfriend.

Here are some images from her Resort 2015 presentation:

I loved this dress on the right!
